When the Click Happened: The Other Side of the Tunnel

There was one topic in our marriage that had a way of spilling into everything.

It didn’t stay in its lane.It crept into other conversations, other moments, other evenings that had nothing to do with it.

We fought about it.We sat down and discussed solutions calmly. We reached out to friends, to family. We worked through it individually. We sat across from a couples therapist and worked through it together.

And then we fought about it again.

For five years.

And then one evening it was gone.

Not resolved in a dramatic moment. Not fixed by one conversation.

It simply vanished. Like it had dissolved into thin air, taking every particle of itself with it.

We looked at each other, almost confused.

Naturally, we tried to find the formula.

What was the one thing that worked? What was the turning point? What was the moment everything shifted?

But the more we analysed, the more we realised

There was no single moment. There was no formula.

It was everything. All of it. Together.Every fight. Every failed solution. Every session. Every attempt.

And that is when a quieter question arrived.

If the solution was always coming why did we have to go through all of that? Why five years? Why so much struggle?

I sat with that for a long time.

Because I hear versions of this question in my sessions too.

What is the point of this pain?If I could just skip to the answer, why do I have to feel all of this first?

And having now stood on the other side of our own tunnel I think I finally understand.

We lost time. I won’t pretend otherwise.

But what that tunnel gave us

The ability to communicate in ways we couldn’t before. To hold space for each other even when it was uncomfortable. To express what we needed without fear of the conversation breaking us.A resilience that only comes from having been tested.A depth between us that didn’t exist before we went through it together.

None of that could have been shortcut.

None of that could have been handed to us at the beginning.

It had to be built.

In the tunnel.

Step by step.

Fight by fight.

Session by session.

As a psychologist I spend my days sitting with people who are somewhere in the middle of their tunnel.

Tired. Questioning. Wondering if it will ever end.Wondering if it is worth it.

And now, having walked out of one myself I can say with everything I have:

The tunnel is not the punishment. The tunnel is the process.

And who you become inside it is exactly who you need to be

when you finally step into the light.

What has a difficult season taught you that the good times never could?
